Worth buying electric guitar, amp, lessons, all the hard work etc?

I have dabbled with guitar over the years and recently found that my interest has been rekindled. I’m OK (know most chords and a few scales) but can’t read music or know enough to thrive in a band, for example. I want to get better, perhaps take some lessons, and am seriously considering buying a good electric & amp (have a good acoustic (Yairi) now). But is all this worth it if I don’t know if I plan on being in a band, playing in front of people etc? It’s great being able to play along with bands you enjoy and being a basement/garage player, but if you don’t have a strong goal to play live or at least have some end goal like that, is all the effort and expense worth it?
